Shànghǎi – Futuristic City [Ciudad Futurista]

Unfortunately our trip to Shanghai was very short, we were there for only 3 days taking advantage of the fact that we had some friends that lived there. Our final destination was actually Vietnam. To travel to China most people need a visa (Colombians, French, Americans , etc.) however you can do transit through the country for a total of 144 hours. So luckily we didn’t have to deal with that! But you do have to get a special permit upon arrival, showing you’re there for the less than the hours permitted.

When arriving to Shanghai I found a city somewhat different from what I had imagined. I found a city very westernized and modern where: you can find all sorts of restaurants and products, with a great public transportation system, and clean/calm streets. Most people use electric motorcycles, which are great because they don’t make any noise (and are better for the environment). On the other hand, it saddened me to see all the pollution in the air, a huge gray cloud over the city that didn’t seem to move. Seeing so many people with masks taking precaution of the condition proves just how serious this problem is, and how it has come to affect the daily life of the people.

Wandering around the french neighborhood; getting on the metro; strolling through the bund, a boardwalk that faces the skyline; spending a day in the “ancient city,” drinking tea and eating dim sums walking through the sky scrapers of the futuristic city and going to the top of the Shanghai Tower; these are all mandatory strolls. Oh and what to say about the food! As I’ve said, you can find restaurants form many countries, but venture out and go to a local restaurant (a whole in the wall), just go and point on the photo and try something different. There is no better way to get to know a culture than through its food.

So if you’re thinking about traveling to Asia, make sure you make a stop in Shanghai, you wont be disappointed!

Desafortunadamente nuestro paso por Shanghai fue corto, estuvimos allí solo 3 días aprovechando que teníamos amigos que vivían allá. En realidad nuestro destino final era Vietnam. Para viajar a China, la mayoría de la gente necesita visa (colombianos, franceses, Estadounidenses etc.) sin embargo existe la posibilidad de hacer transito por un total de 144 horas. ¡Así que por fortuna nos salvamos de esa! lo que si te toca hacer es pedir un permiso especial a tu llegada, mostrando que solo estas de paso.

All llegar a Shanghai, me encontré con una ciudad algo diferente de lo que me imaginaba. Me encontré con una ciudad bastante occidental y moderna donde: podés encontrar todo tipo de restaurantes y productos, con un sistema de transporte publico genial, y calles muy limpias y tranquilas. La mayoría de la gente utiliza motos eléctricas, las cuales son geniales porque no hacen ruido (y son mejores para al medio ambiente). Pero por otro lado me entristeció ver la polución en el aire, una nube enorme sobre toda la ciudad que no parece moverse. Ver a tanta gente con caretas tomando esta precaución, demuestra la gravedad del problema y como ha llegado a afectar la cotidianidad de la gente.

Caminar por el barrio francés; recorrer el metro; pasearse por el bund, un malecón que mira hacia los rasca cielos; pasar un día en la “ciudad antigua”, tomando té y comiendo dim sums; caminar entre los rascas cielos de la ciudad futurista y subir la torre de Shanghai; estos son todos recorridos obligatorias. ¡Ah! y que decir de la comida. Como he dicho podés encontrar restaurantes de todos los países, pero atréveté a ir a un restaurante bien local (un chuzo como decimos en Colombia), vos solo señalá en la foto y probás cosas diferentes. No hay mejor manera de conocer una cultura que a travez su comida.

Así que si pensás hacer un paseo por Oriente, hacé una paradita por Shanghai, ¡no te decepcionarás!
