Travel La Rioja, Spain! In Europe, the regions renowned for their wines are many, and Spain is not the exception. The Rioja region, located in the north of Spain is rich in wine production, specifically red wine. The vineyards surround the Río Ebro (river) and with the years its wineries have become more than just places to store and produce wine, they have become artworks. To begin this trip through the Rioja, we arrive in Logroño, its capital.

En Europa las regiones reconocidas por su vino abundan y España no es la excepción. La región de La Rioja, ubicada al norte de España es rica en producción de vino, en especial el vino tinto. Los viñedos rodean el Río Ebro y con los años sus bodegas se han convertido en más que un lugar de producción y almacenamiento, en obras de arte. Para empezar este viaje por la Rioja llegamos a Logroño su capital.

To visit the region, I suggest you rent a car to arrive to Logroño, this way you will be able to move around the region much easier. Logroño is a city with a charming and lively center, it’s definitely worth spending some nights here. We spent 2 nights in the city center of Logroño at the Hotel Marqués de Vallejo and 2 nights in the country side at an ancient house that was converted into a hotel, Palacio de Samaniego, both places very much recommended!

Para visitar la región les aconsejo alquilar un carro y llegar hasta Logroño, así se podrán movilizar más fácilmente. Logroño es una ciudad con un centro encantador y lleno de vida, les sugiero pasar algunas noches aquí. Nosotros pasamos 2 noches en el Hotel Marqués de Vallejo en el centro de Logroño y 2 noches en un pueblito llamado Samaniego en una casa antigua convertida en hotel, Palacio de Samaniego, ¡los dos lugares muy recomendados!

This place is spectacular, it’s a giant complex which includes the wineries, vineyards and a luxury hotel designed by the famous architect Frank O. Ghery. The complex is impressive and without a doubt the distinguished hotel its gem. The design and colors live perfectly with the landscape of the region. Even though for now we’ll just have to conform with dreaming of spending a night in one of its rooms…

Reservations can be made online and they have visits every day. The cost is 16€ per person and it includes a tour of the winery and a taste of 2 different wines.

Este lugar es espectacular, es un complejo gigante que incluye las bodegas, los viñedos y un hotel de lujo brutal que fue diseñado por el arquitecto Frank O. Ghery. El complejo es impresionante y sin duda el distinguido hotel su gran joya. El diseño y los colores de este conviven perfectamente son el paisaje de la región. Aunque bueno, por el momento solo soñaremos con algún día poder quedarnos en una de sus habitaciones…

Las reservas se pueden hacer en línea y tienen visitas todos los días. El valor es de 16€  por persona e incluye tour de la bodega y cata de dos vinos.

Bodegas Ysios

Ysios is another hidden gem in this continuous landscape of crops. This winery is singular in that the winery itself is an architectural masterpiece, designed by Santiago Calatrava. The winery has an aluminum roof that resembles the mountains that surround it and its wooden walls integrate perfectly with the colors of the landscape. Wine tasting is even more pleasant as it takes place in a big hall accompanied by delicious appetizers.

Reservations can be made online and they have visits every day. The cost is 15€ per person and it includes a tour of the winery and a taste of 2 different wines.

Ysios es otra joya escondida entre este paisaje de cultivos y cultivos de uvas. Lo atractivo de esta es que su bodega en si es toda una obra arquitectónica, diseñada por Santiago Calatrava. La bodega tiene un techo de aluminio que semeja las montañas que la rodean y sus paredes de maderas se integran perfectamente con los colores del paisaje. La cata de vino hace la visita aún más amena ya que va acompañada de una picada deliciosa en un gran salón.

Las reservas se pueden hacer en línea y tienen visitas todos los días. El valor es de 15€ por persona e incluye tour de la bodega y cata de dos vinos.

Bodegas Lopez de Heredia

Even though from the outside this winery sticks to the local and traditional architecture, it has a unique charm. And when entering the boutique, you will be surprised by the modernist design of the room. In this occasion we were not able to take the tour, but we of course did some wine tasting and well bought a bottle…or a couple.

Reservations can be made by phone or through email and the visit includes wine tasting.

Aunque por fuera esta bodega se ajuste un poco más a la arquitectura local y tradicional, tiene un encanto único. Y al entrar a la boutique se sorprenderán con el diseño modernista del salón. En esta ocasión no pudimos hacer el tour, pero aprovechamos para probar algunos vinos y pues comprarnos una o… varias botellitas.
