Choosing which museums to visit your first time in Paris can be… overwhelming. This city has such a wide selection of museums, and they’re all so unique, that this task can be tough. Having stayed in Paris many times and having visited so many museums since I moved to France, I made a list of my top 5 museums to visit in Paris to help you out! This list doesn’t include churches or “monuments” such as the Opéra Garnier & the Panthéon, just purely art museums. 

Escoger cuales museos visitar en tu primer paseo a París puede ser algo…abrumador. La ciudad tiene una selección tan extensa de museos, y todos son tan únicos, que puede ser bastante difícil escoger. He ido tantas veces a París y visitado tantos museos, desde que me mude a Francia, que decidí hacer esta lista de mis top 5 ¡para ayudarlos!  La lista no toma en consideración iglesias o “monumentos” tales como la Opéra Garnier & el Panteón, solo museos de arte puros. 

1. Musée du Louvre

In first position we have the Louvre Museum. Visiting Paris and not making at least a stop there is a sin. The museum was the palace of the French royals until Louis XIV decided to move to the Versailles palace. The Louvre is the biggest museum in the world, and it includes art pieces such as the Mona Lisa, the Venus of Milo, and the Winged victory of Samothrace among many many more.

En el primer lugar esta el Museo del Louvre, ir a París y no pasar por aquí es un pecado. El museo fue el antiguo palacio de los reyes de Francia, hasta que Louis XIV decidió mudarse al Palacio de Versalles. El Louvre es el museo mas grande del mundo, e incluye obras de artes tales como: La Mona Lisa, La Venus de Milo, y La Victoria alada de Samotracia entre muchas muchas mas.

Tips:  If the entrance line through the pyramid is too long, try entering through the Carrousel du Louvre shopping center which can be accessed through the metro, or go down through one of the entrances next to the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel. Also, from October to March, admission to the permanent collections is free on the first Sunday of each month.

Si la cola para entrar por la pirámide es muy larga, intenten entrar por el centro comercial del Carrousel du Louvre al cual se puede acceder por el metro, o bajar por una de las entradas aledañas al Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel. También, de octubre a marzo la entrada es gratuita a la colección permanente el primer domingo de cada mes.

2. Musée de L’Orangerie

One of my favorite museums in Paris, it is located in the Tuileries Gardens, next to Place de La Concorde. The museum houses canvas from impressionist and post-impressionist painters, but its main gems are the Claude Monet’s Water Lilies. These are beautifully displayed in a white oval room that sets the perfect mood to admire and reflect on these beauties.

Uno de mis museos preferidos de París, esta ubicado en los Jardines de Tullerias, al lado de la Place de La Concorde. El museo alberga pinturas de impresionistas y post-impresionistas, aunque en mi opinion, su joya esta en la serie de pinturas Los Nenúfares de Claude Monet. Estas están exhibidas en un espectacular salon blanco ovalado, el cual crea el ambiente perfecto para admirar y reflexionar sobre estas bellezas.

3. Musée de L’Armée (Les Invalides)

Perhaps the name of it, The Military Museum, doesn’t sound very attractive, but this museum definitely needs to be on your list. The museum is located in “Les Invalides,” a building complex originally designed as a hospital and retirement home for war veterans. Here you can learn about French history, through all the French battles/wars up to World War II. Their artifact collection is very impressive. But MOST impressive is the burial site of Napoléon Bonaparte, located in the church under the golden dome; and the Saint-Louis des Invalides Cathedral.

Tal vez con solo su nombre, El Museo Militar, no suene muy interesante, pero este museo definitivamente tiene que estar en tu lista. El museo esta ubicado en “Les Invalides”, un complejo de edificios que fue originalmente diseñado como hospital y casa de retiro para los veteranos de guerra. Acá podrás aprender sobre la historia francesa, a travez de las batallas/guerras hasta la II Guerra Mundial.Su colección de artefactos es impresionante. Pero aun MAS impresionante es la tumba de Napoleon Bonaparte, ubicada en la iglesia debajo de la cúpula dorada; y la Catedral Saint-Louis des Invalides.

4. Musée d’Orsay

The museum is located in the old Gare d’Orsay, this railway station that used to serve the train from Paris to Orléans. The museum houses the biggest collection of impressionist and post-impressionist art work in the world.

El museo esta ubicado en la antigua Gare d’Orsay, esta terminal de ferrocarril servia el tren entre Paris y Orléans. El museo aloja la colección mas grande de obras impresionistas y post-impresionistas del mundo.

Tip: Admission is free for everyone on the first Sunday of each month. / El primer domingo de cada mes el museo es gratis para todo el mundo.

5. Musée Rodin

The Rodin Museum is dedicated to the famous French sculptor, Auguste Rodin. It also contains some famous paintings by Monet, Renoir, and Van Gogh, which were part of Rodin’s private collection. I love this museum because it is located in the old Hôtel Biron, were Rodin himself rented rooms as his art studio; the hotel is not huge so you won’t be overwhelmed; and the gardens, where you will find some of his most famous sculptures, are dreamy.

El Museo Rodin esta dedicado al famoso escultor francés, Auguste Rodin, y también contiene algunas pinturas famosas de Monet, Renoir, y Van Gogh, las cuales fueron parte de la colección privada de Rodin. A mi me encanta este museo ya que esta ubicado en el antiguo Hôtel Biron, donde el mismo Rodin alquilaba habitaciones para su estudio de arte; el hotel no es super grande, así que no es tan abrumador; y los jardines, donde encontrarás algunas de sus esculturas mas celebres, son espectaculares.

Tip: Access to the permanent collection is free on the first Sunday of every month from October 1 to March 31. / Acceso a la colección permanente es gratuita el primer domingo de cada mes entre octubre 1 a marzo 31.
