Opinion – The Peace We All Want [La Paz que Todos Queremos]

It makes me sad to see how Colombians fight with one another for peace when at the end of the day we all want the same thing: peace. If we took a moment to really listen to what our neighbors have to say, we would understand that the heart of every one of us is with the peace.

Living in France, I understand why I must repeatedly explain to others why the people that voted for the “no” also want peace, but the fact that it is also the case among Colombians is a little hard to understand. Have we all suddenly forgotten that the true enemy in this story is the FARC? One of the world’s oldest guerrilla groups, whose ideals began with those of Che Guevara, but due to things like POWER and MONEY, has become a terrorist group and one of the biggest drug cartels. That same group threatened kids into joining them, killed people, kidnapped, knocked down infrastructure, blackmailed multinationals and small businesses, and forced thousands of countrymen to move to the cities. Those are our real enemies.

The part of the country that voted “no” in the referendum voted NO to an agreement that didn’t take into consideration other sectors of the population; an agreement that is anti-democratic and gives special privileges to the FARC to participate in politics (instead of going the democratic route); an agreement that delegitimizes the judicial branch (what message does this convey to the people?) and gifts the leaders with impunity; an agreement of 297 pages that was revealed to all Colombians barely over one month before the referendum took place.

To my friends, relatives, and the curious readers, peace is constructed by starting with oneself. If we’re not able to listen to our neighbors, to tolerate our differences, to promote a constructive rather than a destructive environment, we will never get that peace we all yearn for. And to the people that have done nothing but publish destructive and cynical comments in social networks, I hope that these strong opinions were reflected in votes and not just in fuss.

Our manipulative government decided to go after everyone that was in disagreement with them, and accuse them of not wanting peace. Made them out to be the “bad guys”, when the reality is, that not everyone has to be in agreement with them, we’re a democracy.  Peace cannot be summed up to a “yes” or  a “no,” because we all want the same thing: a “stable and lasting peace”.

Me entristece como mi país se pelea por la paz cuando al fin y al cabo todos queremos los mismo, la paz. Si tomáramos un momento para realmente escuchar lo que tiene que decir el vecino entenderíamos que el corazon de todos esta con la paz.

Viviendo en Francia entiendo porque debo repetidamente explicarle a la gente que los que votaron por el “no” también quieren la paz, ¿pero que este seal el caso entre los mismos colombianos? es un poco incompresible. ¿A caso se nos ha olvidado que el enemigo de este cuento son las FARC? uno de los grupos guerrilleros mas antiguos del mundo cuyos ideales empezaron con estos del Che Guevara, y que por esas cosas de la vida llamadas, PODER y PLATA, terminaron siendo un grupo terrorista y uno de los carteles de droga mas grandes. Mismos que han reclutado a niños con amenazas, matado gente, secuestrado, derribado infraestructura, chantajeado multinacionales y pequeños negocios, y han contribuido al desplazamiento forzoso de miles de campesinos a las ciudades. Esos son nuestros enemigos.

La parte del país que voto por el “no”  en el plebiscito, voto NO a unos acuerdos que no tuvieron en cuenta a otros sectores de la población; un acuerdo que es antidemocrático y que da privilegios especiales a las FARC para hacer política (en ves de tomar la ruta democrática); un acuerdo que deslegitima a la rama judicial del poder publico (¿que mensaje se le esta dando al pueblo con esto?) y el cual es cercano a la impunidad; un acuerdo de 297 paginas que se le revelo al pueblo colombiano con tan solo poco mas de un mes que el plebiscito tuviera lugar.

A mis amigos, conocidos, y lectores curiosos, la paz se construye empezando por uno mismo. Si no somos capaz de escuchar al prójimo, de tolerar nuestras diferencias, y de promover un ambiente constructivo y no destructivo, nunca llegaremos a esa paz tan anhelada. Y a la gente que no ha hecho sino poner comentarios destructivos y cínicos en las redes sociales, espero que esas opiniones tan firmes que tienen se hayan visto reflejadas en votos y no en bulla.

Nuestro gobierno manipulador decidió irse enciman de la gente que no estaba de acuerdo con ellos, y acusarlos de no querer La Paz. Intentó hacerlos quedar como “los malos del juego”, cuando la realidad es que no todo el mundo tiene que estar de acuerdo con ellos, somos una democracia. La paz no se puede resumir a un “si” o “no”, porque todos queremos los mismo, “una paz estable y duradera”.
