Pau, France [Pau, Francia]

On my last post I wrote about my experience on moving far from my family. But…where am I? I’m in Pau, France. A city on the southwest of France located in the department of Atlantic Pyrenees.  In about an hour we have the ocean, Spain, and the Pyrénées Mountains, therefore there’s always something to do in its surroundings.

The first week I would go out everyday to visit and walk around, everything was new and different. The apartment where I live is right in the center of the city, so EVERYTHING is close by. I will give you a small tour of the city: The Boulevard des Pyrénées, a boulevard in the heart of the city that looks towards the mountains, is one of those places in which you stand in front of it and you feel like you are part of a photograph taken by a tourist, it’s gorgeous. This is the ideal place to have a beer, enjoy time with you friends, or go out jogging if it’s your thing. The famous castle of king Henry IV of France, king beginning in 1586, is located on one of the ends of the boulevard. The castle is probably one the most visited attractions in the city. When exiting the castle you will find many small streets, boutiques, and an ancient church. On the other end of the boulevard you will find the Beaumont park and palace, a congress centre, in which there is also a casino and a bar/club. Well, and technically this is the conclusion of your tour in Pau.

After about a week of being here, I understood why many people would ask me what I thought about Pau with a certain smile, and then they would conclude with a: “the weekends you have to  leave Pau.” And it’s true. The city is very beautiful and the people here are very nice, but it really is a big village. During the week all the stores close at 7pm, the restaurants at 10pm, and on Sundays everything is closed. However, I don’t complaint because the city is in an ideal region. In the summer some of the most coveted beaches in the region are just about 1 to 2 hours away, you can do walks or camping in the mountains, and in the winter you can ski or practice any snow sport. Lastly, in my opinion the cherry on the cake…Spain and its Basque Country, which are located literary next to here.

It’s hard coming from a city like Houston or Medellin to such a small city like Pau, specially if you don’t know many people. However just like anything in life, you have the choice to either be bitter or put your will into it enjoy life. I hope to leave you with the curiosity of wanting to know more about Pau, which even though it is small, it is a beautiful french city located in an amazing region.

En mi ultima entrada escribí un poco sobre mi experiencia en mudarme lejos de mi familia. Pero bueno…¿dónde estoy?, en PAU, Francia. Una ciudad al suroeste de Francia, ubicada en el departamento Pirineos Atlantico. A mas o menos una hora esta el mar, España, y la cordillera de los Pirineos, así que siempre hay algo que hacer a sus alrededores.

La primera semana salía todos los días a conocer y caminar, todo era nuevo y diferente. El apartamento donde vivo queda justo en el centro de la ciudad, entonces TODO esta cerca. Acá les hago un mini tour de la ciudad: El Boulevard de Pyrenees, un boulevard en todo el corazón de la ciudad que mira hacia las montañas, es uno de esos lugares en el que te paras enfrente de el y sientes que eres parte de una fotografía tomada por un turista, es precioso. Este es el lugar ideal para tomarse una cerveza, disfrutar con los amigos, o salir a trotar si es lo tuyo. Hacia uno de los de los extremos del boulevard esta ubicado el famoso castillo de Enrique IV, rey de Francia a partir de 1586, este es probablemente una de las atracciones preferidas de la ciudad. Al salir del castillo te encontrarás con callecitas llenas de pequeños almacenes, restaurantes y una gran iglesia.  Al otro extremo del boulevard se encuentra el parque y palacio Beaumont, un centro de congreso, en el cual también hay un casino y un bar/discoteca. Bueno, y prácticamente ahi concluye el recorrido por Pau.

Después de mas o menos una semana de haber estado aquí, entendí porque muchas personas de acá me preguntaban que tal me parecía Pau con cierta sonrisita, y concluían con un: “los fines de semana hay que salir de Pau”. Y es verdad. La ciudad es muy linda y la gente acá es muy amable, pero en si es un pueblo grande. Entre semana todos los almacenes cierran a las 7pm, los restaurantes a las 10pm, y los domingos todo esta cerrado. Sin embargo, no me quejo porque la ciudad esta en una region ideal. En el verano unas de las playas mas cotizadas de esta zona nos quedan a tan solo 1 o 2 horas, se puede hacer caminatas en las montañas o camping, y en el invierno se puede esquiar o practicar cualquier deporte en la nieve. Por ultimo, en mi opinion la cereza en el pastel… España y su país vasco, que quedan literalmente al lado.

Es didicil llegar de una ciudad como Houston o Medellin a una tan pequeña como Pau, en especial cuando no conoces a mucha gente. Sin embargo como todo en la vida, es tu decision amargarte o poner de tu voluntad y gozar la vida. Espero dejarlos con la curiosidad de conocer mas sobre Pau, que aunque si que es pequeña es una ciudad francesa muy linda en una region espectacular.
